I come from a large and particularly insane family of 6 children. We were always up to no good: finding new ways to rearrange the living room furniture as a circus stage, or acting out the various parts of Annie while jumping from sofa to sofa. We were lucky enough to have very relaxed parents, an enormous collection of dressing up clothes and a wonderful hostess trolley which, by lying squished up, we could all fit on the shelves of and use to whizz around the living room on adventures.

Being the oldest of 6 girls I remember desperately searching for anywhere and any way I could get some privacy and I used to take myself off to hide up a tree or in the linen closet with a book. I think for me, writing has always been an escape and as a child I filled notebook after notebook with stories about anything I could think of. I remember one particularly dire murder mystery where I invented a whole host of improbable reasons why minor characters would wish to kill one another and the whole thing seemed to go on forever! (Funnily enough that one has never been published….hmmm I wonder why?)

I love writing for children because I have a very clear, very happy memory of my childhood and I still love that feeling of disappearing into a little world of imagination. My own children help me think of ideas – I am a bit silly sometimes and most of my books have grown out of crazy games I play with my kids.

I grew up in Australia, Hong Kong and France before coming to England. I studied law at University and became a barrister and I now work part time for a police think tank (this means somewhere which looks at what the police do.)

I live in Hove with my family.
