有一天，尼莉正在讀一本百科全書，她讀到關於「老鼠」的介紹：灰色皮膚、大耳朵、細長尾巴。
尼莉看了看鏡子裡的自己，驚呼一聲：「天啊！原來我是一隻老鼠！」
於是，這隻「巨型老鼠」決定搬去跟真正的老鼠一家人住在一起
。雖然老鼠們覺得這位新成員體型「大得有點誇張」，但還是好心地收留了她。
然而，身為老鼠的生活可不簡單：
- 住的問題：尼莉想鑽進老鼠洞，結果差點把整面牆都擠垮了。
- 吃的問題：一小塊起司對其他老鼠是滿漢全席，對尼莉來說連牙縫都塞不滿。
- 行動問題：老鼠們身手矯健，尼莉動一下就地板震動。
尼莉開始困惑了：「為什麼我跟別的老鼠這麼不一樣？」
為了尋找答案，鼠奶奶建議她去動物園看看。在那裡，尼莉終於看到了一群跟她長得一模一樣的動物。
尼莉興奮地大叫：「看！我就說我是老鼠吧！這裡有好多巨大老鼠喔！」
故事的最後，尼莉雖然找到了同類，卻依然堅信自己是「老鼠」。
更絕的是，原本待在尼莉身邊的一隻真老鼠，看了書之後反而覺得自己長得跟尼莉（大象）一樣，開始自認是一隻「象」。
